Year 6 is for children 10–11 years old and is the final year of Key Stage 2 before embarking on their journey to secondary school in the following September. This year is likely to be focused on the end of key stage 2 National Curriculum assessments, otherwise known as the Standard Assessment Tests (SATs).
In most schools, a great deal of work will be carried out to prepare for this time. Hopefully, your child’s teacher will help your child prepare for the tests without them even realising it. Every school is obviously different, but your child’s teacher will probably aim to keep the stress levels down with plenty of fun and valuable learning.
These can seem like a daunting part of your child’s education for both parents and their children. However, if you know what to expect, they don’t need to be scary for you or your child and, here at Star Tuition Hub we have a range of resources to support you in supporting your child during this time. Why not enquire to find out more.
- Maths: Age 10–11 (Year 6) - In Year 6, your child will apply the maths they already know alongside developing new skills to help solve more complex problems.
-
- They will work with numbers up to 10 million and begin to learn about algebra and ratio. They will convert measurements, calculate volumes and learn about circles.
- They will draw and interpret pie charts and find averages.
- They’ll be taught long division for dividing four-digit by two-digit numbers.
- They’ll be able to use brackets in calculations and explain remainders.
- They’ll learn to multiply and divide with fractions and decimals, and calculate percentages.
- English: Age 10–11 (Year 6) - In English, your child will now be expected to understand how to use a full range of punctuation, to write with a wide variety of sentence structures, use powerful vocabulary, and to generally spell words accurately. They may well be fully independent readers, choosing their own books and non-fiction texts based on their own interests. The writing your child does at school will be increasingly confident and creative.
- Supporting reading in Year 6 (Age 10-11) - By Year 6 your child will hopefully be reading independently at home and school for lots of different reasons. Some children may still be reluctant to read adventurously and can get stuck on one author, series, or type of book. Having favourites is great, but Year 6 is also a good time to push the boundaries and read new genres and forms.
